How to Protect my Pet’s Paws from the Cold?

13 January 2022 — Cats and Dogs

Would you step barefoot outside in the snow? Probably not, right? Even if your pet’s paw pads are resistant to the cold, they can still get chilblains. Here are some tips on how to protect your pet’s paw pads when going outside.

Beware of the Cold

Remember that if the temperature is too cold for you, it is also for your pet. When temperatures are freezing, your cat or dog shouldn’t go outside for a long period. It’s also really important not to leave your pet alone in your car in the winter.

Boots and Socks for Dogs

Just as winter boots protect our feet, boots and socks for pets are the most effective way to protect their paw pads during winter. These accessories help avoid burns caused by the cold or by de-icing products used on roads and sidewalks. Boots and socks also protect paws against irritations caused by gravel getting lodged between your pet’s toes. If you have a cat though, this will probably not work, because cats do not like having their paws covered.

There are various models of boots and socks available in stores. The best way to find the right size for your furry friend is to bring them with you. Try to choose a model in which your pet seems comfortable.

Wax: A Solution Against Chilblains

If your cat or dog can’t get used to wearing socks or boots, wax is actually a great alternative. You can find this product in most pet shops. Make sure to choose a wax made from 100% natural ingredients. You can also do it yourself with a homemade recipe.

Wash Your Pet’s Paws After a Walk

If your furry friend does not wear protection when they’re out walking, de-icing salt can accumulate between their toes. To prevent any burn, it’s essential to rinse your cat or dog’s paw pads with lukewarm water as soon as they get back home.

Trim Hair Between Paw Pads

It’s important to trim the hair between paw pads for long-haired cats and dogs to avoid the collection of snow and to keep your pet comfortable during walks.

Now that you have some tips to protect your furry friend’s paws during winter, you’re ready to go on an adventure! Have a great winter!
