Superfoods super GOOD for your pet

4 May 2021 — Miscellaneous

Superfoods are foods naturally good for any human being, delivering maximum amounts of nutrients but with a very low-calorie intake. Unsurprisingly, these superfoods are also great for your pet, packing a lot of health benefits into a bowl.

Superfoods help pets (like people) fight disease while providing a boost of energy. They also support good health and maintenance, which makes them a great add-on to their everyday diet.

Here’s a list of 6 superfoods that you can gradually introduce to your pet’s diet. Make sure to give them the proper proportion and check with you veterinarian before if your dog has any allergies or health issues.

Blueberries.

Loaded with phytochemicals, they are full of antioxidants, supplying vitamins C and E, manganese, and fiber. They are available all year long and can be given fresh or even frozen as a low-calorie crunchy treat!

Pumpkin.

Full of soluble fiber, pumpkins are loaded with vitamins and minerals to help maintain a healthy digestive track.  Because pumpkin is high in carotenoids, potassium, and vitamin C, it helps to support the immune system and can even prevent or slow cancer growth. Also, did you know that pumpkin is a natural de-wormer? Pumpkin seeds are rich in cucurbitin, an amino acid acting as a natural de-wormer by paralyzing tapeworms and other intestinal parasites.

Sweet Potato.

One of our top-choice superfoods for pets, these bright orange root vegetables are rich in dietary fiber, beta-carotene, and antioxidants.  Sweet potatoes are a key source of vitamins and minerals to keep immune systems strong.

Flaxseed.

These nutty-flavored seeds are loaded with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Flaxseeds are packed with a whole lot of fiber, an important factor to a pet’s digestive health but also essential in maintaining healthy skin and a shiny coat. Many pet foods contain flaxseed as part of their ingredients, but Zoë takes flaxseed to a whole new level, making it a key ingredient in their dry dog food recipes , dry cat food recipes as well as in their dog treats. Pet owners should seek advice from their veterinarian on how to incorporate flaxseed in their pet’s diet if food sensitivities or allergies are present.

Quinoa.

This ancient seed is linked to spinach and has earned the title of “superfood” due to its nutritious content. Because of its high protein and essential amino acids content, quinoa is a good source of fiber and a potent antioxidant that is easy for cats and dogs to digest.

Cranberries.

Cranberries are rich in antioxidants and nutrients that help support your pet’s immune system, playing a major role in keeping your pet healthy. In fact, their high ratio of vitamin C is what distinguishes Cranberries as being a key driver in helping to prevent urinary tract infections, improve cognitive functions and alleviate allergies and skin problems.

There is no denying why these 6 superfoods are our top picks and why many premium pet foods, including Zoë, incorporate them as part of their food’s ingredient list.

Overall, superfoods should be a portion of a complete and balanced diet that also includes animal proteins like chicken, duck, turkey, beef, lamb, pork and fish for optimal development; cats and dogs by nature need protein to thrive and have a healthy, happy life.
