5 unsuspected dangers for pets during summer
20 July 2020 — Miscellaneous
Summer is ideal for pets and pet parents to spend time together. But it is important to learn how to protect your furry friends from the dangers the season holds to better enjoy this beautiful time of the year.
- Heat and Exercise
Did you know that dogs are even more sensitive to summer heat than humans? Therefore, it is important to modify your routine during heat waves. Take walks early in the morning and in the evening. It is also crucial to provide your pet with fresh water all day long to avoid dehydration.
- Swimming
Swimming is a great exercise for your dog and even for certain cat breeds, but you should always keep an eye on them. It is important to always supervise your pet while they swim to prevent drowning hazards. If you are spending your vacation with your dog by the sea, make sure to rinse them after swimming; sea water can irritate your pet’s skin.
- Fireworks
Even though fireworks are spectacular to watch, the noise they make can be very stressful for pets. If your pet is sensitive to noise, avoid these kinds of outings.
- Barbecues
Summer is BBQ season! You’re not the only one enjoying the good smells coming from the barbecue; your pet can smell them too! In addition to burning hazards associated with barbecues, some food or ingredients can be extremely dangerous for your pet’s health, such as spareribs, T-bones, alcohol and some spices.
- Parasites
It is also the season of fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Be sure to get a preventive treatment for your pet.
Enjoy your summer!
