Get a coffee and adopt a pet at The Dog Cafe

April 10, 2017

There is an amazing, magical place in Los Angeles, California called The Dog Cafe and it will make your dreams come true. This unique spot offers a delightfully simple model: come for the coffee, stay for the dogs. Yes, that’s right, while you sip your delicious beverage you can play with a bunch of cute pups. The best part? All of the dogs are rescues, so if you like one (or many!), you can take them home.

According to The Dog Cafe’s website, their mission is to revolutionize dog adoption by reinventing the way people connect with rescues who need homes. Shelters are generally overcrowded and overwhelming. It can be difficult to get to know a pup in that kind of environment. The stressful environment is also likely to change the behaviour of the dogs there, making some come off as more aggressive than they actually are. The Dog Cafe is trying to change this practice by providing customers the opportunity to engage with pups in need of a home in a relaxed, comfortable setting.

The idea for the café came from Sarah Wolfgang, who spent 16 years volunteering with shelters and rescuing dogs overseas. Wolfgang says that by socializing the dogs at the café and providing them with some much-needed medical care, their likelihood of adoption skyrockets. Some dogs may come off as shy at a shelter, but in the café’s relaxed setting, the dogs are comfortable enough to be open and friendly with humans. While visiting The Dog Cafe is easy and extremely enjoyable, the adoption process is a little more complicated. They’re quite picky about choosing a forever home for the rescued pups, and feel strongly that each dog deserves the best home and humans possible.

If you find yourself in the Los Angeles area, but are unable to adopt a pet, the café encourages customers to come in just to spend time with the dogs. Human interaction is hugely beneficial to the overall happiness and well being of the rescue dogs at The Dog Cafe. We hope to see more coffee shops copy this business model!
